British’s New Game May Undermine Their Long-term Interests

The British are adept at seizing opportunities to pursue short-term gains. When the Hu Jintao-Wen Jiabao administration was just getting underway, they engaged in complex political maneuvers to play a new game of orchestrating large-scale demonstrations in Hong Kong. They had the chance to secure short-term benefits at the expense of the Chinese. However, this new strategy inevitably undermined their long-term interests. Prior to 1997, under the leadership of a strong British government and the formidable politician Margaret Thatcher, the British failed to secure the most favorable outcomes. Today’s British government and politicians are attempting to gain more through complex political maneuvers. Yet the likelihood of the British achieving this goal is extremely slim. This is because, in the long-term trajectory of bilateral relations, the British will inevitably grow weaker, while the Chinese will inevitably grow stronger. The British pursuit of short-term gains through such maneuvers will inevitably pose enormous risks to their political and intelligence presence in Hong Kong.
